The Samoas
Feasibility Visit to The Islands

In January 2009, Dr. Larry Richman, Dr. Byron Mass, and Emma Clifford
visited American and Western Samoa to research a possible collaborating
with local NGO's and governments regarding Animal Balance assistance to
reduce their ever growing dog population.

Local animal protection organizations, Animal Protection Society of Apia,
(Western Samoa) and the American Samoa Humane Society of Pago Pago,
(American Samoa) contacted Animal Balance to create a sustainable
strategy for dog management and control.

Our hosts kindly showed Animal Balance evidence of the over-population
problem and organized government meetings. We gathered evidence of
the situation, created agreements with our new partners, and are now in
the process of writing for grants to help the dogs and people of American
and Western Samoa.

We also assisted with 2 sterilization clinics; one on each island. We
sterilized a total of 67 animals in those 2 days with the Animal Protection
Society of Samoa and the American Samoa Humane Society.
veterinary technicians, and assistants for a 2 week campaign on the islands
scheduled for Spring 2010.
